The majority of employers are currently unable to provide increases in salaries. Is there something that employers can do to help?

Providing an educational "Money Management Workshop" for employees could make a big difference for many. It may sound simple, but many have great difficulty managing their funds and debts. There are some solid and practical tips regarding money management that many people don't know.

With the help of experts in this field of money management, an educational workshop, which doesn't sell any financial products, can instruct employees of how to set up a budget, learn of free resources, explain the difference in banking products (i.e. money markets, certificate of deposits, savings, etc.). They can also learn how to make wiser purchases, review debt management, etc.

Offering an Educational Money Management Workshop can help employees to position themselves, such that money worries no longer consume them while at work. This is a benefit that will truly continue giving to your employees and strengthen their loyalty to you. Give this serious consideration.

Robyn Crigger

ARE YOU USING SOCIAL MEDIA RESPONSIBLY?

How has Social Media impacted our society? The younger generation may have been the initial fans of this new venue of communication, but as Social Media has crossed over the generational lines, the impact is increasing.

In order for generations to communicate, the use of advanced media was a must. As we all know, technology is always changing. In order for businesses to keep current or attempt to stay ahead of the curve, eventually businesses must adapt to the latest trends of communication.

Social Media has found its way into marketing, the company communication lines, human resources (including recruiting, employee relations, etc.), a leadership tool, etc. However, with the convenience of this resource, there are also risks and a lack of privacy or confidentiality.

Our legal system has noted concerns about the quick development? Some of the Social Media venues have already proven to be a nuisance and cross the lines of personal privacy. Though technology can be a real asset, the challenge today is that there is no one watching out for a person's privacy. You Tube and other media venues have caused some major issues of concern.

What are businesses doing to avoid serious irresponsibility for those persons managing their Social Media departments? There are risks that need to be avoided. What is your company doing to be responsible in this fast-moving area? Do you have strong guidelines and steps in place to use technology in a professional way?

Social Media can be a real asset when used wisely and responsibly.

Robyn Crigger

EMPLOYERS: HOW DOES YOUR WORKFORCE STACK UP?

In order for your organization to be better this year compared to last year, there needs to be some improvements and investments. If not, how can you expect better outcomes? You need to have a strategic plan, which includes specific goals and details on how to reach those goals. Many leaders like thinking of the "big picture" and may not want to be bothered with the "details". However, such plans must be in place and then implemented in order to reach positive, successful results.

The big picture should include a Succession Plan that prepares those existing leaders to eventually retire, exit, or change jobs at some point. Meanwhile your leaders need to take specific, proactive steps. The Talent Management process is what helps the Succession Plan to succeed. The Talent Management process guides an organization through effective hiring, talent development, retention, and other organizational development. Without a solid Talent Management process, an organization will find itself with poorly selected employees, as well as losing your "good talent".

Those "good employees" are the first to leave if they don't feel appreciated, or are not given opportunities to grow and develop. As most employers know, the less abled and responsible employees are the last to leave a company. Which employees do you want on your workforce?

Learn more about Talent Management through Compass Career-OI Partners.

Robyn Crigger

RETRAINING? YOU MEAN NEW TRAINING!!!

Today many of those who are unemployed no longer have the skills to apply for current open positions, as their existing skills are out-of-date. You may have heard of some organizations providing "retraining", but that implies that the person already has "the needed training".

Sadly, many employers no longer want to provide "on the job training", even though there are many who could learn a new skill, if an employer would only teach them. It would seem a "win-win" if employers would be open to hire those unemployed and willing-to-learn people and teach them the needed skills for their jobs.

There are so many unemployeed people, who would jump at the chance to be trained by an employer and would be so appreciative to those employers, giving their best efforts to an employer with such a generous heart.

The phrase "re-training" is a confusing one. Also, who is paying for this "retraining"? If paid by our federal government, are the participating employees being promised jobs at the completion of the class? Are the outcomes of this "retraining" being tracked as how affective they are?

Employers are encouraged to seriously consider finding candidates with the aptitudes needed for the work, and then providing "on the job training". Give it a shot! Some people like to make resolutions for a new year, which is fine if you select ones that are reasonable and productive, but to set yourself for failure is counter productive.

You should set some goals for you personally, as in "to eat healthier" -- not starve or say I won't eat any desserts. That is setting yourself up for discouragement. Keep your goals reasonable and also ones that can really make a difference. So eat more vegetables, and try to avoid eating so much fried foods, etc.

As for professional goals, what can you do to improve your performance or help your employer be more successful? How about using your time more wisely? How much of your time do you spend surfing the web, playing games, or texting to friends? To say that you won't do any of that is extreme. Instead, reduce this wasteful use of time.

Instead, consider helping your employer -- most would value an employee who is either helping the company save money or make money. So how can you do that? If you see that there is an over abundance of supplies, reduce the order. Or if you have an idea for gaining new customers, share your idea. Adding or retaining customers is a huge help to a business!

If you feel that your skills need sharpening, see if your employer might pay for you to take a class on management skills, or conflict resolution skills, etc. If not, you can consider taking such classes yourself. Investing in yourself is always wise. Of course, if you are helping your employer to improve, he/she might feel that you deserve such an investment.

Make 2012 a positive year. Help others and yourself, and all will benefit!

Robyn Crigger

What Will You Do Differently This Year?

Now is the time to get busy planning some effective efforts to improve your business for 2012. Doing nothing or the same things is a major mistake! The holidays demonstrated that some people are willing to spend some money, and there were signs of hope by retail stores. So what are you going to do?

There have been some insiders to say that a number of companies have some healthy reserves in their pockets. Heaven knows there are a majority of employees, who are overdue receiving some attention. Why not provide some solid training and coaching to help those overworked employees to be more effective, and maybe even consider other benefits that would lift their spirits?

Think of all those companies in the community that you haven't met or would like to know. How about getting out from behind the desk and computer and meet some of them? We in the business community would be wise to get out and shake a few hands and share a few smiles. Let's make 2012 a positive year in multiple ways. Let's stretch and grow! Are you still holding the same position or have you been promoted? Has your salary increased? Has your employer provided you with training and/or coaching to develop your talents and skills?

There are thousands of people who have experienced unemployment sometime over the past 3-4 years and gone months, if not years, without a steady income, not to mention benefits. Therefore, if you have kept your jobs in the past few years, those unemployed won't have any empathy for you.

However, many of those employed have also had to take on more responsibilities and sometimes longer hours, which have them feeling exhausted and unappreciated. For this reason, as crazy as it may sound to those "unemployed", many of the employed people are feeling "burned out". Therefore, a survey has said that a majority of these "employed" people are looking seriously at changing jobs.

There is another perspective: the employer! Yes, those employers, who have been extremely careful business persons and been able to keep their businesses alive, feel that they have done all that they can do to provide jobs for their employees. Yes, some companies have actually done fairly well through this economic nightmare.

All three of these factions will say that none feel that they have been "in control" of their circumstances. Still, one piece of wisdom has been relayed: "It is time for each of these groups to take charge of their futures!"

1) The unemployed can take classes to learn a more employable career. 2) The employed should be doing their researches and watch for opportunities with credible and proactive businesses, who will also invest in their employees. 3) Employers need to take progressive measures to strengthen their businesses, keeping them current and innovative.

Watching the stock market and waiting for some positive economic signs is like "watching a pot of water to boil". Instead, do your reasonable amount of research and take steps to improve your situation. What is your goal for your career in 3 to 5 years?

Anyone, who has any career ambitons, should have a plan to reach his/her targeted position and to be ready to put forth efforts to achieve that goal. Efforts should, no doubt, include continuing education and training. (Although you would be wise to also include networking with other professionals as part of your career development.)

It would be appreciated for employers to provide the appropriate training to grow one's skills and capabilities. However, if that doesn't happen, the individual is encouraged to seek out the training and education needed.

Depending on the level of position a person seeks, the higher the position, the more helpful an Executive Coach can be. An effective coach can position an individual to a much higher level of leadership.

So as you approach this new year of 2012, the future is in your hands. Take the time to develop your plans for your career's future.

Robyn Crigger

Do You Have a Good Foundation for Your Organization?

Do you have a good foundation in your company/organization so that everyone understands what is expected from each employee? Has the president made it clear what are the company's goals? Are your employees clear about their boundaries and what authority they have to accomplish their goals?

These are all important questions. They may seem elementary or basic, and yet if you ask your employees about these points, are you sure what they would say?

When a person is hired for a specific position, he/she should be given a clear understanding of his/her job description. However, sometimes the supervisor may not state what he/she is allowed to do to accomplish his/her task. If there are decisions to be made, are they allowed to decide on their own or are they required to ask permission?

If you notice some employees not being as productive as you'd like, you might ask them what is holding them back? Maybe they are reluctant to tackle a challenge if they doubt what is permitted. It is important for the president of an organization to not only set the pace and relay a clear understanding of company goals and expectations, but they also need to set the example. Good Communications is one of the biggest challenges for any size company.

The president should begin this process by sitting down with his/her key executive team and discuss what is needed to move the company in a positive direction with specific goals. Using an outside expert is often helpful with this effort -- the goal being to create an effective and viable plan/foundation for a successful future. Depending on your industry, some businesses are really busy between Thanksgiving and New Year's (especially retail). Other industries may find that their daily activities become sluggish and extremely quiet. But don't get discouraged.

If you are a business, who is swamped during this period, you are probably thankful to be busy, though the more organized you can be and alert to keeping a handle on overhead, the better the outcome.

For those in a company, which finds the phones quiet and activity slow, now is a time to be planning a strategic calendar for 2012. Research all you can on economic forecasting, making sure you have the best people on staff, and providing those people with the best tools and resources in order that they can be most effective and productive.

The old saying that you have to spend money to make money has some truth to it. However, it is "how" you spend that money that produces positive results. There needs to be a well-based plan for marketing and development to be successful. What will it take to reach your goals? Do you have creative and strategic people on board to help you identify your needs and who know of valuable resources? Are you "listening" to the needs of your customers/clients?

We want all to enjoy this holiday season, yet use any quiet times to maximize your best potential for 2012. If you use your time wisely, you should be able to make some good decisions and take whatever actions you can over the next few weeks to prepare for 2012 and still savor the special meaning of this holiday season.

Robyn Crigger

COLLEGE EDUCATION VERSES SKILLED TRAINING

Education is one of the best investments a person can make in him/herself. Only two or three generations ago, it was not uncommon for people not to graduate from high school. So a high school diploma was a valued accomplishment.

Then some of our grandparents went to college to earn a bachelor's degree. A Master's degree was considered outstanding (exceptions being doctors and highly technical areas of education, who went even further).

In more recent years more people are going for their Ph.D. degrees. However, what has been the main reason for this? Obviously, having a Ph.D. can be quite prestigious, as well as being a big expense and hard work, but why are more people doing this? The fact is a college education has become unbelievably expensive, causing some big debt for many families.

Currently, our nation has more college-educated citizens unemployeed than ever before. Many less educated are unemployeed, too. So a college degree doesn't make you immune to unemployment.

Another interesting fact is that there are fewer "skilled" individuals today, though many companies and industries have needs for specially skilled or technically skilled employees. When you think of how much a plumber, electrician, or HVAC professional earns, why aren't more people going into these professions?

Some type of special training or skill is very marketable these days. Even welders and brick layers are sought after. If you are unemployed or know someone who is, you may want to mention that these types of positions are worth consideration. These skills and work may cause you to get your hands, etc. dirty, but the money you can earn can pay for a lot of bills.

Education is still valued, but maybe it is time to consider other career avenues, where skilled training can lead to more opportunities.

Robyn Crigger

ENTREPRENEURSHIP - The Heart of America

It may sound impressive to be the president of a company, but for anyone in those shoes, he/she can tell you that it can be very challenging. When all is going well for the company, it is great!

Unfortunately, these days our economy continues to cause such chaos and uncertainty. Taxes and costs keep rising. Those of us who own businesses in Mecklenburg have already been hit with the news of our rising taxes on our buildings. The increase is far from nickols and dimes!!!
Utilities are rising as well, so as our overhead increases, what can we do but pass it onto our customers.

As more people lose their jobs, there are fewer people who have money to spend. Of course, a person can't earn any interest on money in banks, which makes it nearly impossible to get ahead. This equates to spending less -- if possible.

I can say that if you get into a line of work, for which you have a passion, there can be times of positive rewards. I value helping people in a job search and gain a lot of pleasure connecting them with solid business contacts. There are some companies and industries, who are doing fairly well, and there needs to be hope for more of this happening.

Still, I encourage you to support the presidents, especially of small businesses, who work hard every day to keep "the dream of entrepreneurship" alive. It is hard work, but this is what makes up the backbone of America.

Robyn Crigger

HOW TO HELP YOUR COLLEGE GRAD LEAVE THE NEST

In the last few years more and more college graduates are unable to land a job, and therefore are turning to live at home with their parents. With college loans to be paid, the parents are finding themselves not only providing room and food for their college grads, but some are helping to pay back the college loans.

Unfortunately, at this stage of life, the parents are having to tap into their own retirement funds in order to help their grown children. It is uncertain what advice (if any) these young adults received in selecting their educational paths, as there are some careers that are less needed now and others in more demand. Are our college students being given good career advice at these colleges and universities, and if so, are they heeding that advice?

In addition, there is also the question as whether these college grads are being instructed on how to go about effective job searches? Sitting in front of a computer for hours each day is NOT the answer!!! Networking is still the number one way to find a job, but it takes much more. One must be very focused in a job search.

Instead of paying for room and board, perhaps parents should use their funds more effectively by hiring a job search firm or enrolling their grads into job search classes. Furthermore, the individuals must be accountable for their efforts. Sitting in a class isn't enough.

No doubt, finding a job today is HARD WORK!!!! It can also be very discouraging, but the keys are 1) selecting a career path in more demand, 2) be organized, 3) follow through on each effort and 4) persevering. A college education is very valuable, and yet today it may seem like that is not enough when in the job market.

As for the parents, who are tapping into their retirement funds, it would be wise to reconsider how to help your college grad.

Robyn Crigger

How to Make a President-CEO Effective & Successful

Presidents and CEOs of companies need coaches and advisers every bit as much, if not more than, other business executives. Whether starting with a company or have an existing position as president or ceo, a c-level coach needs to be experienced dealing with this level of responsibilities, as well as have knowledge of major decision making, and of course be one who is totally trustworthy.

Presidents/owners, etc. have heavy concerns and decisions to make. Their coaches should be straight-forward, honest, and candid with their clients. This C-Level Coach should pull all aspects of any situation and be able to help their clients think through different perspectives and sort through the facts (and not rumors) in order to understand the repercussions of the final decision.

When selecting such a coach, personalities are a factor. However, if the president/owner looks for a coach who he/she can manipulate or control, it would be a waste of money and effort to get a coach. Business Decison Makers are responsible for the outcome of businesses. They would all be wise to select and utilize an Executive Coach, who can help them to make good decisions that produce a successful business.

If the coach isn't providing constructive criticism, he/she is probably not doing the best job for the client. The exchange in their relationship shouldn't be complimentary but constructive. This relationship should help to develop the president's or ceo's knowledge and wisdom, which would also strengthen his/her self-confidence. Receiving qualified criticism and learning from them are what makes the presidents/ceos more successful.

Finally, note that such a relationship should begin with a committment of at least 6 months to a year. It will take time for the trust in this relationship to develop, but once that bond is formed, the outcome can be extremely beneficial for the president and the company.

Robyn Crigger

NOW IS A TIME FOR EMPLOYEES & EMPLOYERS TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER

Since employees and employers have both been under a lot of stress the past 2-3 years due to our devastating economy, we should be looking for ways to help each other strengthen our health. Many are dealing with high blood pressure, depression, weight issues, migraines, etc. In fact, stress has been known to be the culprit for many illnesses.

What can employees and employers do to help each other in this matter? Here are a few ideas:

1) Be more pleasant and supportive to each other. Make positive comments and offer encouragement.

2) Be less critical and argumentative. Employees should try to be on time, and employers should try to be less critical and more understanding.

3) Both should look for ways to make their businesses more successful so that both can reap the rewards.

4) Consider taking steps to educate about and encourage healthy eating habits, as well as possibly arranging exercise classes at the workplace.

What ideas do you have to help your fellow employees and employers reduce their stress? Are the people motivated and enthusiastic about their work? How many of your employees would you say are really "good employees"?

As you need supervisors and managers, how many of those "good employees" would make "good supervisors or managers"? No doubt you know the saying about "assuming". There are many "good employees", who are dependable and do a good job, but does that make them good supervisors, managers, or leaders? Not necessarily.

To lead a group of employees and get them to work well as a team, it takes a special quality. Think of a manager or supervisor you have had, who you considered "good". What made that person "good": effective as a leader? Some qualities that come to mind include: Good Communicator, Displayed Good Judgement, Respectful and Fair to All, Organized, Dependable, Honest, etc.

Even with all those qualities, a good leader needs to be taught "how to manage people". If you want your business to run smoothly and efficiently, take the time and money to provide solid instruction on leadership. This is one investment that is worth its weight in gold.

Robyn Crigger

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT OUR CURRENT STATUS?

After being self-employed for over 17 years, I am starting to see more and more fellow small business owners closing their doors and either returning to "employee status" or retiring. You don't have to be a genius to understand why this is happening. The tough, back-breaking economy is the biggest culprit!

It's tough enough to battle dramatically reduced spending. Both individuals and companies are holding on TIGHT to their money. Of course, it is understandable, and yet we can't put our heads in the sand and hope some miracle will pull us through. We all have choices, and it is important to remember that nothing stays the same.

So how do we move forward during this continuing recession? There needs to some creative thinking and courage for all of us to get through these difficult times. What can each of us do to stimulate growth and confidence in our country and our businesses? We can't depend on someone else to develop a fresh idea or new approach. We need to turn to ourselves and our fellow Americans.

Positive thinking, being open-minded, delving into research, having healthy exchanges with others, and even taking tough criticism can enable us to find ways grow and improve. Together we can all make a difference. Share your ideas for strengthening a business. Reach out and be supportive to others. When we began our company over 17 years ago, our focus was "Outplacement services". However, our approach to Outplacement was totally comprehensive, including a variety of services to address different aspects of a company's transition. This could include team building or supervisory training, etc. if the facility was going through a merger or acquisition. Often we provided "Retirement Workshops" for those employees choosing to retire instead of change jobs, as well as career exploration and resume development.

Though there is still a need for strategic Outplacement services, and some companies still are willing to support those employees being released, there are also other transitional-related needs. For instance, those in our field are fully aware that MANY companies and organizations will not be prepared when their "baby boomers" begin exiting -- not to mention that 6-7 out of every 10 employees will soon be eligible for retirement. The majority of companies have not provided any leadership or management training for about 2+ years. Therefore, most won't have prepped management personnel ready to step into those retiring baby boomers' shoes. This is going to hurt a LOT of organizations!!!

In addition, other types of services that will be needed include Coaching: Executive, Communication, or Performance; Strategic Organizational Development, Team Building, Assessments, Effective Hiring Instruction and Evaluation Support, etc.

A key question to employers is "what are your biggest challenges in keeping your organization from moving forward?" Chances are we/Compass Career-OI Partners can help! We are an employer's HR partner. While attending a meeting recently where the discussion was on what makes an effective board of directors, I could definitely agree with most that was said.

Having served on both non-profit boards and private company boards, I've seen some good and bad practices. Selecting those to be on the boards is the first big challenge. Those chosen need to understand what is expected of them and be held accountable. It can help for the new director to meet with the previous one, as well as the chairman in order to ask questions. I have also seen positions on the board, where the purpose of that role is not taken seriously by the leadership. What a waste!

Several years ago I attended a "Board Training Session". This taught the differences in boards and relayed some possible expectations, as well as informing me of what questions to ask of the board or chairman when asked to join the board.

The leadership of a board makes a huge difference. Some chairmen/women are more focused and better facilitators. I've also seen some boards who manage their time and process more effectively. The more structured the process, the more productive the board. A Board should be taken seriously.

Employers, use your board to consciously help to strengthen and grow your business. Select appropriate members. Having a solid HR representative should be imperative. Sooner or later this person will be instrumental.

Robyn Crigger

Presidents & CEOs - We Need You to be Proactive Leaders

From my conversations with many employers in the Charlotte area, I hear many comment on their observations of poor productivity and/or a lack of focused efforts. When asked about why they believe this is happening, there isn't always a clear explanation.

When this topic is pursued further, it sometimes is noted that leaders aren't always clearly communicating their expectations to their management team or workforce. A lack of communication is one of the gaps in many companies and organizations.

The second piece to this challenge is the need to have the best people in management positions. If those managers/supervisors are not well trained and/or experienced in their roles, that inhibits the communication process. Therefore, business leaders need to invest in training and/or coaching their management staff.

Additionally, managers also need to feel "empowered" and trusted to do what is needed in order to accomplish the company leader's goals and expectations. Of course, good communication is also needed between managers and the workforce. The other important point in this matter is for managers to be good "listeners".

All of these pieces fit together like a puzzle. Therefore, all three aspects of this equation are needed in order for a company to reach their goals and be successful. However, any successful business/organization begins with a "proactive" President and CEO!

Robyn Crigger, CEO
Compass Career Management Solutions-OI Partners

Why Isn't This Idea One Logical Solution to Our Delimma?

How can small businesses survive in this economy? The larger firms seem to be doing well -- to the point that many of their bank accounts are bulging! Meanwhile the small firms have cob webs in their accounts. Some medium-sized firms are struggling, too, but the smaller ones seem to be hurt the worst.

Since large firms are currently flush with cash, why couldn't the larger firms utilize the expertise and services of the smaller firms, which would be a great way to circulate funds in the communities. If smaller firms were being put to work by larger ones, the small businesses could hire employees, benefitting even more people in our communities.

Why wouldn't this work? As an example, let's say that a big firm like Duke Energy or Wells Fargo recognize a need for "Leadership Development Training", and they hire our firm to provide this training. If there were many people within Wells Fargo to be trained, we could use multiple trainers or coaches to address this service, thereby providing business activity for our small firm, as well as our hiring of others.

This is how such a "trickle-down process" could benefit a community full of small businesses. Charlotte has many large firms, who possess the finances that would enable such a scenario. How do we get large firms to open up to this idea? Can they not see how positively they (the large firms) could impact our community's economy?

How do we get this from being an idea to becoming a reality? Companies who would step up and utilize the small firms in town could become our community's "heros"!!!! Why couldn't this be feasible? Why wouldn't large firms want to do this? Though we all mean to produce our best in our careers, by the time the day is over, if we have often pushed ourselves too hard, thus what we produce is probably less than our best.

How many of you have gone months, if not years without vacations or relaxing breaks? It's easy to do. With many companies short-handed due to downsizings, those working can easily find themselves at a loss of fresh ideas. Is your energy non-existent? Do you find yourself feeling drowsy during the day?

As much as you may feel that you need to work those long hours in order to get your work done, you may be surprised to know that taking a day or two off can make you even MORE productive after some rest. Of course, you will also benefit from fresh air and exercise. It is now stated that the number one killer of women is heart attacks, and that they tend to die with their first heart attacks. Men tend to survive their first heart attacks. What has changed?

More women are reaching higher level work positions with more responsibilities and stress. Though women have wanted to be given the opportunities of men, had women realized that with the higher level positions came the more intense stress? More women are also finding themselves as single parents, raising their children on their own. Add to that the many women, who are care givers to aging parents, and all combined have placed women's health at a much higher risk.

As much as I know that women are very capable of handling a lot and being good at whatever they tackle, I also know that many women (if not most) put themselves at the very last at getting enough rest, eating healthy, etc.

Companies can do everyone a BIG favor by encouraging good health practices for all their employees. National Business Women's Week (NBWW) is a time to recognize all the contributions women make in our communities. NBWW will be celebrated on October 20 with a luncheon at the Omni Hotel and provided by the Metropolitan Business & Professional Women's organization in Charlotte. PLEASE consider having your company or organization to show support to your women by sponsoring and/or attending this event. Go to www.mbpw.org to learn more or call me at 704-849-2500. Probably a combination of getting more business, not losing good talent, and avoiding some of the challenges of growing technology.

As I have shared in the past, getting more business won't come from "sitting on your hands" and leaving everything status quo. A business needs to be on the cutting edge, sharpening the skills of their workforce, and be proactive and creative in marketing. We know that we get 80% of our business from 20% of customers. So what are you doing to encourage repeat customers, as well as locate new customers? Is your customer service as good as it should be? Have you provided aggressive "customer service training" lately? Are you "sitting on your hands"?

Next, take a look at your talent pool. How do they stack up? With a sluggish economy your employees need to be sharper than ever before. If they are feeling over-worked and under appreciated, shame on you! Give serious consideration to training -- Leadership Training, Management Training, etc. Give your workforce a shot in the arm with solid instructions that can make them more effective.

Lastly, what aspects of technology have caused you and your organization the most challenges? Are your computers and programs current? Do you have trouble with the security of your technology? Though not an expert in this field, we are pleased to share solid resources with our business friends.

Take time to review your weak areas and do something about it! If you are already feeling rejected, watching our depressing newscasts won't help.

Instead, continue working on constructive efforts for your job search: a) keep contacting all those that you know and grow your network. Ask who those friends know. b) Take into account all your skills and see how they might be used for a different job. c) Watch for classes that can either update your skills or add new ones. d) Get out and attend professional organizations that are related to your field or are of interest to you. e) Target companies of interest to you and who are likely to use someone with your skills, even if they don't have an opening right now.

Business Owners, you are no different! What are you doing to gain more business? Is your company's services/products out of date? a) Give your employees training to be more current or competitive. b) Ask your existing clients what they need and how you can assist them? c) Seek new clients and get acquainted with them. d) Research your industry or related fields and see what those companies are doing to grow their businesses. e) Review what you have done in the past -- maybe it is time to return to past practices that worked. Of course, don't forget to give your customers lots of TLC - stay in touch with them.

It is easy to get discouraged during these crazy times, but don't panic or feel sorry for yourself. More than likely, any effort that an individual makes would not really impact our economy. However, a company has a better chance of making a positive contribution toward a community.

Developing a new product or service, which would require hiring more employees or improving the company's finances would be a good example of a positive impact on the local economy. What creative ideas could initiate a new service or product? Think of something that might help to strengthen or benefit people in your community.

If a company uses other small businesses to strengthen itself, that would help the local economy. (i.e. training, etc.) If those small businesses were able to help the company to grow stronger, that would benefit the local economy.

As each business improves its performance, the better the chance for improved economic development. Obviously, you know that your company has to sell a service or product in order to make money. So everything else within the business costs money: employees, electricity, rent, "ingredients" that make up the product or service, etc.

What is the biggest expense? The employees (salary, benefits, uniforms, etc.)! If your employees are high risk (unhealthy or clumsy, etc.), they will cost you/employer even more. How carefully do you screen your new hires? In addition, if you don't train your employees, can that cost money? Without Safety Training, employees could get hurt. $$$$

If you don't train your employees on good Customer Service Skills, they will be less likely to calm or keep customers returning. $$$$ If you don't provide Sales Training, your employees will likely be poor at sales. $$$$ Without Leadership Training or Management Training, your company leaders could run off good employees, costing you more $$$$.

Who in your company handles the hiring? Has that person(s) been trained to manage an "effective hiring process"? If not, they could be selecting poor employees, which costs companies even more $$$$.

Take time to provide your company with solid professional care! A recent artitcle relayed that more and more employees are actively seeking better job opportunities. At a meeting I attended recently, a woman announced that her husband had decided to leave his current job to take one that should benefit their family both financially and should keep him from working such long hours. Evidently, the current employer was quite upset with this man's decision, but his family is very pleased.

So many people have been working more and harder as employers have downsized and added to everyone else's work load. Over all, many employers are still having to run very lean, and the government's economic forecast doesn't provide much, if any reason to change that.

Still, employers need to look at their workforces and be sure to do anything they can to retain those "good employees". Flexible hours or fair dispursement of workloads, as well as other creative perks or benefits, including training or education retirement workshops could make an employee think twice before leaving. What are you do to make employees feel appreciated?

It is understandable that most employers cannot increase salaries, but are you encouraging employees to use their creativity to develop ideas to grow the business? Perhaps they might think of something that you haven't. How often do you tell your employees how much you value all that they do? All positive gestures can help you retain those valuable employees.

Robyn Crigger, CEO
Compass Career Management Solutions

What Is Keeping Small Businesses from Hiring?

For quite a few years, small businesses have been the fastest growing segment of business. Not only were more small businesses popping up, but they were also successful. But now MANY small businesses are struggling just to stay open. Why?

Obviously, most would say that the bad economy is the culprit, and that is true, however, let's expand on that further. It should be noted that even though interest rates have dropped like rocks at the banks, many small businesses, who are renting spaces, have landlords who are increasing their monthly rent fees. How is that possible? Good question.

I have seen many businesses, who have closed or relocated further out where they can find more reasonable rent. Some have said that with these uncertain times that property owners fear their renters might fail, so they are charging higher rent to get what they can and make up for the terribly low interest at the banks. I have seen this to be true with businesses who own or are paying mortgages for their buildings...steady paying businesses are having their mortgage loan interest rates being increased. Why?

Of course, the cost of many things have increased -- gas, shipping, coffee, etc., which hits small businesses, who have already been hit hard for the past two years as is. Now with practically no interest on their small business accounts and being hit with increased rent/mortgages, there is no money left for expansion or adding employees! Small businesses need to get a break!!! Not be penalized!

What is the solution? Who can help? When you entered college, how did you decide what you wanted to study? Were you given assessment tests? Did you speak with a career counselor? Did you have someone who you admired and wanted to follow in their footsteps? Perhaps you had special passions that stemmed from a personal event in your life.

Too many follow other classmates in their studies, not having a clue what career is best suited for them. Each person has strengths and natural abilities, which can help him/her to select a career path utilizing those talents. Of course, if you have a special passion, that can help to match your abilities to a certain industry or business.

Though many people do not give their career selections enough attention initially. there are many who take the time to examine this more carefully when a career transition takes place later in their lives. Whatever career path you choose, there will probably be levels of growth in that path. This path should include getting actual experience in the field, as well as additional education and training over time. So what is your eventual career goal and what are you doing to accomplish this?

Invest in yourself and your career; seek employers who will do the same. This is a win-win for both. Be open to potential evolutions to your career path. There is always new information that can cause a twist to one's career path. Learning is constant. However, there are many business persons professing to have "the" answer or "the" solution to your sluggish business.

The fact is some of the important factors involve practices that are "no fun" or seem boring. Here are a few of the critical factors of a successful business:

Be sure that your business idea is sound, and the money management plan is followed.

Have a focused marketing plan and follow it! No procrastinating or delays allowed!

Select a good business attorney and CPA -- they are worth their weight in gold!

Use HR experts who can help you hire credible and effective employees -- NOT friends, neighbors or family! Hiring bad employees or those not a fit can cost you a lot of money and possibly lead to legal nightmares.

These are just some of the TOP priorities for a successful business. The list of depressing statistics and data only makes everyone discouraged and disillusioned. It leaves many feeling hopeless. Obviously, we can't "control" the economy.

What employers, especially those of small businesses, need are ideas of ways to strengthen their companies and improve production/sales. What is keeping that from happening? Yes, a large portion of customers are NOT spending money. So what can companies do to loosen the purse strings? What would entice customers to spend their money?

Chances are whatever it is, your employees are not currently capable of providing! Why? This takes research as well as training. Experts in Customer Service, Business Development, and possibly Leadership Development or Effective Communication would be able to identify and help train the employees to reach a higher level of potential, positively impacting their companies.

Isn't your company worth such an investment?

Robyn Crigger

The Positive Impact and Value of Training & Education

As I sat in the Charlotte Economics Club meeting this week, listening to our speaker from the Federal Reservce Bank in Atlanta, I looked around and saw the faces of attendees. Most were definitely NOT surprised by the information being shared. In fact, it seemed more of the "same old stuff" with NO resolutions or suggestions.

Though the banks seem to have plenty of money now, there are few people eligible for loans, since most people are now in waist-high debt, and their houses aren't worth half of their purchase prices. Those with jobs don't feel secure, and those without jobs can't find employers willing to hire them.

In addition the companies, who do have money on hand, refuse to release those funds, even for "training and development", which could benefit and strengthen their firms. Do companies not understand the positive impact that training can make on their "bottom lines"? Now is the time for employers to "manage their talent" and develop their young, inexperienced workforces! Such training could help companies break through this stagnet economy! Obviously, most of us know of those who have "milked" our government (and us tax payers) by taking unemployment payments, while doing little to seriously seek employment.

There are many job search candidates, who have spent a LOT of time applying to jobs online and going to job postings on the internet. Unfortunately, only a VERY small percentage of people locate their jobs this way. A VERY small percent!!!

The most effective way to land a job is through NETWORKING!!! People need to get out of their chairs and homes and meet other people -- neighbors, relatives, past-co-workers, alumni, etc. People also need to attend a variety of group venues: job search support groups, community organizations, professional organizations, trade organizations, etc.

Talking to others can help to lead to meeting another, who may have contacts in the company which interests you.

Research companies which have the types of positions, in which you would have an interest. Work on getting to know people in that organization. Build relationships and gain allies, who might be able to help you.

It is important that your resume clearly reflects that position you seek and note what skills you have, which makes you effective in that area.

Employers, don't dismiss good job search candidates, who may have been unemployeed for a longer time. There are many good people caught in this depressed economy. Give them a chance to prove what an excellent investment they could be for your organization.b This should include "mature" employees, who have a LOT to offer!!!

Robyn Crigger

Include Your Heart & Gut in Your Decisions

Whether in business or personal decisions, we all know how wise it is to gather the facts and examine all pros and cons. However, sometimes that isn't enough.

Have you ever made a decision strictly on "those facts", but for whatever reason, your gut or instincts don't feel good about it? Why is that? There has been research on this topic, but science can only help to a limited degree in explaining this phenomenon.

Some people are very in tune with their instincts and depend on them a lot. Others don't pay any attention or "don't feel any gut-type response" when making decisions. When it comes to meeting people, there is a large number of people, who find that their instincts are very dependable indicators of whether that person is worth knowing or avoiding.

When in a job search, we all experience many different hiring processes -- some are even quite bazaar. Hiring and interviewing processes can be an indicator as to what type of employer this company is by the way they treat job candidates. Though the unemployeed NEED jobs, beware of companies who put you through extensive, rigorous, or unusual hiring practices. Decision Makers need to also be keenly alert. Don't blow off your instincts too quickly.

Robyn Crigger

LET'S BE HONEST!!!

As much as I like to be optimistic, I am also realistic. There may be some job opportunities developing, but I regret to say that many small and medium-sized firms are struggling just to stay alive.

As I circulate throughout the Charlotte Metro and talk to more and more companies, many are doing everything they can to push forward, but they are not seeing much positive activity. More of the larger firms need to help by loosening their purse-strings and utilize those vendors and suppliers so that more have a chance to not only survive but help those larger firms to grow themselves. This would be a win-win for all.

There could be more productivity if company leaders would empower their human resource professionals to tap into strategic service providers, who could train, coach and/or develop their existing workforces. Yes, human resource professionals in your firms know of effective vendors who could help your employees to be more productive, making you and your organization more successful. The issue or concern will vary from time to time, but at this point of time, many have acknowledged that more and more Baby Boomers are thinking of and/or planning to retire in the near future.

Some had planned to retire a couple of years ago when our economy crashed, but these people are now saying that they are ready to retire. Meanwhile another group of BBs are actively planning to exit over the next 1-3 years.

Note that the Baby Boomer generation is a LARGE number of employees. The issue or concern for companies/organizations is that they have been focused on salvaging their companies but not developing their next generation of leaders. You could definitely hear caution in their voices and yet still taking steps to advance their companies. There wasn't any mention of plans for substantial growth -- like large additions of staff, and yet they don't seem to be refraining from some forward movement, including performing research and development.

However, Arreva and Seimen's representatives appeared to be taking a more aggressive approach. Siemen's, in particular, is taking steps to add numerous positions to prepare for future changes and growth in the energy industry. This was a positive and encouraging sign. However, all agreed these are uncertain times in regards to the economy.

Most attending this conference seemed to walk away with an understanding that though our economy is not where we want it to be, we in business must continue to take steps to grow our businessses and look for ways to encourage positive, "smart" growth.

What are you doing to grow your business?

Robyn Crigger

Hiring -- Are You Using The Best Approach?

When talking to employers and human resource professionals, I find it quite interesting how many different ways hiring is handled. Of course, you need to be thorough and be sure of the skills, experience, and personal traits needed for each position. First, be SURE of the job description! This is SO IMPORTANT! Once this is confirmed, step back and confirm how the job candidate affects those around him/her.

If the job is being part of a "team", there should be extra consideration given to the candidate's personality, strengths and weaknesses in order that the team works well together.

But how many company representatives need to be involved in the interview process? Initially, one person should be able to screen for skill capabilities, background checks, and reference checks. Next, before calling the candidate to come in for an interview, consider the use of assessments. There are some good assessment tools that recognize good personality interaction when working closely with others. There are also assessment tools to identify what position and work would be a good fit for a candidate. These can help to eliminate a lot of unnecessary and multiple interviews.

If the job candidate possess the skills and experience needed, has a compatible personality for the team or department, and has been cleared of any legal or criminal issues, the interview process can possibly be reduced in length.

A good person to interview the candidate initially (once screening and assessments are done) would be the person directly supervising this position. As a professional supervisor, he/she should be equipped to identify good traits, skills, and personality characteristics that would make the candidate effective for that job. Team interviewing and multiple exchanges seldom benefit this hiring process.

There are NO guarantees for any new hire, however, an important point to remember is if the candidate or new employee demonstrates concerns or an inability to do the job within a reasonable amount of time, DO NOT prolong the decision to release that person. You will be doing a disservice to the candidate and yourself. Use a "focused and strategic hiring process" for best results. One fact is that the candidate and his/her supervisor need to "click" and be compatible! They doesn't mean that they should have the same type of personality, BUT instead, complement each other.

Robyn Crigger, CEO

Are You a Positive Influence to our Future Society?

If advising a young person on selecting a career, what would be the top three points you would make? What do you believe are the most important aspects or factors in the selection of your career? Today business colleges and universities are talking to their students about ethics. With so many in business delving into poor ethics, it might make society wonder if there are any ethics today? Look how many people have swindled money from innocent investors while demonstrating little to no remorse for their actions! What has happened to our society? Does no one have a conscience anymore? As the parents of these young people or their teachers or supervisors, what messages are you relaying to them? Are we encouraging high standards and ethics? Do we encourage honesty? If not, or if not saying anything, what does that imply? As they become adults, what career path would help them to fulfill their dreams and ambitions, while being a positive influence and contributor to society? With so many negative images and actions appearing on our nightly news, our future generation of leaders NEED to hear solid, responsible, and ethical advice. Encourage those young people who you know to take the "high road" in business and in life -- to carefully select a career that uses their talents while contributing to the betterment of our world. What do you consider to be the top priority in your life? When we are young and still in school, most of us don't give a lot of thought to being an adult and what we might want to accomplish in our lives. We may have hobbies, and we hopefully have a supportive family, who we love, but to think of what we want to accomplish or contribute in our lives doesn't usually get much thought until later in adulthood.

Unfortunately, when only 18 years old, we are expected to choose our career path to follow through life. That is a gigantic expectation for someone who is still far from "mature". However, one thing parents can do is expose their children to different careers and allow them to examine and explore what each career is really all about.

Most students entering college are listed as "undecided" and given about two years before requiring they select their major, with some exceptions. Hopefully, the students will take this time to continue exploring the different aspects of different careers. Some schools (K-12) do provide some "career days", and all parents should encourage their children to examine each one.

Many employees in our work places have taken jobs that aren't a good match, but with the need to provide a living, many feel trapped in the jobs they have. Give your children a chance to learn about a wide variety of careers, what education is required, what the daily routines and duties are expected, responsibilities involved, etc.

If parents do this, our society could actually have a happier, more content workforce in the future. Parents should also encourage their schools to provide as wide and diverse of careers as possible for their students to explore. The more time the students have to discover the many careers available, the better chance they have of selecting a career that is a better fit.

Robyn Crigger, CEO

Employers, Are You Aware That Your Employees Are Seeking Better Employment?

This is not a new topic, but as I circulate in different business group settings and talk with individuals, it is clear that employees are tired of being patient. They have given and given and done a lot for their employers over the past 2 or more years. The media and even the President has told employers/businesses that it is time for them to spend money to help our economy.

It is stated in the media that many employers now have some fair amount of funds in their bank accounts, and yet employers are skiddish about spending. Meanwhile costs of groceries and gas, etc. escalate.

To add to the employees' frustration, many have expressed that employers haven't even provided any or much training for 2+ years. In order for the employees to do the best at their jobs, many need training. In addition, as the Baby Boomers prepare to retire, no one is being offered "leadership training" to prepare the less experienced employees to step into supervisory or management shoes.

How long will it be until employers take action to strengthen their workforces for the future?

Robyn Crigger, CEO

What Precautions Have You Taken to Protect Your Business?

When we hear about disasters --like the one in Japan -- do we ever think "what if something like that happened here?" Whether from a personal standpoint or one of a business owner, the thought of a terrible event would leave us shaking in our shoes!

Though we may have been very fortunate in the past, a disaster could happen. A fire, flood, or whatever could hit any of us. Are we prepared? Did you hear that many in Japan survived because they were prepared and knew what to do in a disaster? I suspect most of us do NOT have a plan.

As a homeowner, you probably have good insurance on your home. Business owners have insurance on their buildings, but what if the business was shut down for a week, a month, or longer? What would happen to your business and the employees? What about your customers?

We all need a plan that is practical, strategic, and having considered most (if not all) contingencies. With electricity down and possible building damage, how would you proceed? Do you have everything stored in one place? Do you have backup for your critical data in order to keep "doing business"?

An Emergency Plan is an "excellent" idea. Also, who would be good resources in such a case? If you needed immediate supplies, a temporary office, etc.?

The other thought might be to look around your business and see what might be done to avoid some kinds of disasters? A backup of supplies should be on hand but possibly kept elsewhere. What about fire safety? If sprinklers go off, what materials are being left out that should be stored in file drawers or cabinets? You may want to encourage employees to put important papers away before leaving at the end of the day. Some items may need to go into a safe.

Taking the time to take some safety measures now, could reduce some major headaches later.

Robyn Crigger

Building A Solid Support Team for Future Growth

Where do you get new ideas for your business? Over time do you find that your business seems stale and in need of a fresh twist to your service or product? Where do you turn for creative ideas?

If your business doesn't have a Board of Advisors, perhaps you might consider at least setting up a group of credible business experts, who can offer insight into different aspects of a business. An understanding should be in place or a confidential agreement signed by all. Forming a professional advisors' group can benefit all if you each mutually agree to exchanging creative ideas with each other.

It would also be a good idea to set a schedule of times to meet and share ideas. Possibly once every other month or once a quarter. All involved should make this a commitment and seriously seek ways to help the others.

One other area where such a group could help is to offer solid advice for challenges each business encounters. This team of experts or advisors can be critical to the future of your business.

Robyn Crigger
